What is the New York Boating Safety Certificate?

The New York Boating Safety Certificate is a credential issued by the New York State Parks or an otherized course provider to individuals who have successfully completed a state-approved boating safety course. It serves as proof that the holder has learned the essential boating knowledge, including state laws, emergency procedures, and navigation rules.

Is this the same as a “boating license”?

While often referred to as a “boating license,” New York does not issue a traditional license for recreational boating. The Boating Safety Certificate is the required credential for operating motorized vessels on New York waters. It is valid for your lifetime and does not need to be renewed.

Who is required to have a Boating Safety Certificate?

Under Brianna’s Law, all operators of motorized vessels are now required to hold a Boating Safety Certificate. This law was phased in over several years, and as of January 1, 2025, the requirement applies to all motorboat operators, regardless of their age.

What types of boats does this requirement apply to?

The requirement for a Boating Safety Certificate applies to all motorized vessels, which include personal watercraft (PWCs) such as Jet Skis and WaveRunners, as well as other specialty powerboats. While not mandatory for non-motorized boats like canoes and kayaks, taking a safety course is still highly recommended for all boaters.

What is the minimum age to take the course?

You must be at least 10 years old to take a New York-approved boating safety course and receive a certificate.

Is your online course officially approved by the State of New York?

Yes, our online boating safety course is officially approved and recognized by the New York State Parks. This ensures that your certificate will be accepted for all legal requirements when operating motorized vessels on New York waters.
