What is the California Boaters Safety Certificate?

The NY Boater Card shows that its holder has successfully taken an approved boating safety course and passed the corresponding exam.

Is it called a boating license, boater education card or boater education certificate?

In NY it is called the New York State Boater Education Certificate. The card is issued by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP).

What are the benefits of taking a boater safety course?

When do I have to have a Safety Certificate by?

As of the dates shown below, these boaters will be required to carry a boater education certificate issued by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP), unless they meet certain exemptions. New York Environmental Conservation Law Section 49 contains the following phase-in schedule based on operator age:
January 1, 2018 – Persons 10 years of age or older
January 1, 2019 – Persons 12 years of age or older
January 1, 2020 – Persons 14 years of age or older
January 1, 2021 – Persons 16 years of age or older
January 1, 2022 – Persons 18 years of age or older
January 1, 2023 – All persons regardless of age

How long is the course?

Approved online courses run a minimum of three hours to complete.

How do I replace my Boater Card if I’ve lost it or it was damaged?

To replace a lost or damaged Boater Education Certificate in New York, you can order a replacement online through ilostmycard.com, the official card replacement service used for New York State Boating Safety Certificates. There is a fee for the replacement certificate, and once ordered you should receive your new card by mail within several weeks. For certificates originally issued by an online course provider (like Boat‑Ed, BOATsmart!, etc.), contact that provider directly for replacement options as well.
